Larry, a widower in his 60s recovering from a knee injury, where he has to have physical therapy, but he refuses to do the work it takes to return to normal. In particular, he refuses to use his walker and take trips around his yard. He tries to celebrate his late wife’s birthday by dancing with her photo until his knee gives out on him. The festivities are further interrupted by a man claiming to be from the power company at the front door. He sends the man away suspecting a scam, especially when the man asks about looking around the property. Later, Larry has to endure the “torture” of physical therapy on his knee. The therapist shows him compassion while inflicting pain on him, and scolds him for not doing the exercise he needs to do to heal. He opens up to her and they have a nice heart-to-heart, and he just has one request, for her to take the jewelry box of his wife’s jewelry he had out for her birthday back upstairs to the bedroom. Alone again, he attempts to go outside and down the porch steps without the walker, but is unable. Similarly, trying to ascend the stairs ends in failure. He must sleep in his recliner in the living room. However, that night he hears a noise and discovers the back door open. He tries to go upstairs, where he keeps his gun, but falls on the steps. To his horror, he discovers an intruder at the top of the stairs.
